Full coverage of The Vote: America's Future

Lester Holt will lead our full coverage of one of the most contentious, highly anticipated, and consequential midterm elections in our nation's history, with control of Congress up for grabs and President Trump's power being put to the ultimate test.

The first polls will be closing just before we come on the air this evening, and our team is fanned out all across the country to cover all of the critical races, ready to bring you the earliest results as they roll in. Savannah Guthrie and Chuck Todd will join us with analysis at our election headquarters in New York.

Could we be witnessing a historic turnout tonight? Kristen Welker will report on voters lining up at the polls all day, after many districts from coast to coast reported record-smashing early voting numbers.

President Trump will be watching the election returns at a White House reception tonight. And while the president isn't on the ballot, this midterm election is very much a referendum on his first two years in office. Hallie Jackson will be monitoring the president's reactions tonight, after he spent the last week on a whirlwind tour across the nation with a message of fire, fury and anti-immigrant fear. Will voters accept or reject his nationalist vision for America?

Andrea Mitchell will look at how this high-stakes night is playing out for the Democrats. If they get the blue wave at the ballot box they're hoping for, what would they do with their new power?

Critical races to watch

23 and 2. Those are the numbers to keep in mind tonight. Democrats need to flip a net of 23 seats to capture the House, and a net of 2 seats to take control of the Senate.

Gabe Gutierrez is covering the key Senate races, including the battle in Texas between incumbent Ted Cruz and Beto O'Rourke, which has become the most expensive Senate race in history (watch Lester's extended interviews with Cruz and O'Rourke from our Across America tour). Gabe will also take a look at the heated Senate race in Missouri, a red state where Democrat Claire McCaskill is fighting for her political life against challenger Josh Hawley.

Kasie Hunt is monitoring the critical House races, including battles in Virginia and California that could turn the tide tonight.

Thirty-six governor's races are happening throughout the country, and they have provided some of the biggest fireworks of this election. Kerry Sanders will have all that drama, including the bitter fight in Florida between Democrat Andrew Gillam, who is hoping to become the state's first black governor, and Republican Ron DeSantis, a Trump-backed Republican.
